This section explains operation for when the control mode is either Manual or Semi-Auto. Note that the same operation can produce different actions for different characters.
NOTE: “up arrow / down arrow / left arrow / right arrow” indicate “Up / Down / Left / Right” on the Left Stick.
Below mentioned controls are how to move characters.
DASH / WALK
Pushing right or left on Left Stick will cause the character to run in either direction. You can make the character walk by only slightly pushing Left Stick.
button + Left Stick
You can make the character move freely on the battlefield by using the Left Stick while holding down the Button.
( button + : In the case of Semi-Auto)
Pushing up on Left stick allows the character to jump when the control mode is set to Manual. In the Semi-Auto control, push up on Left stick while holding the button to jump.
Hold down the button to guard. Doing so will protect the character from physical attacks such as sword attacks and punch attacks, as well as lower damage received. However, if you guard against physical attacks for too long, a Guard Break may occur. When this happens, you are temporarily immobilised, so be careful
OTHER GUARD ACTIONS
For characters that have learned special skills, multiple Guard Actions become available. Below are the basic guard actions.
Backstep: button + / (in the opposite direction you are facing)
Jumps backward to avoid an attack.
Critical Guard: button + / (in the opposite direction you are facing)
Guard is effective as the character move forward and also if specific timing is met, the damage received is nullified.
Magic Guard: button +
Lowers damage received by magic attacks.
Recovery: button (while falling)
Correct timing, while falling, will allow characters to immediately get back on their feet.
SELECT A TARGET
Tapping button switches the target selection of the controlled character to the nearest enemy. To freely change the target using the Left Stick or Directional button, hold down button to pause battle and then choose the new target.
Fatal Strike Gauge
Indicates how much each gauge filled.
Here are the basic attacks using weapons. The default setting allows for three consecutive attacks. When you succeed in attacking an enemy without the enemy guarding, you recover 1 TP. We will use Yuri as an example.
Slices an enemy overhead.
/ + button
Thrusts a sword towards an enemy.
Uppercut attack, ideal against enemies in the air.
+ button (while jumping)
Uppercut attacks while in the air.
+ button (while jumping)
Cuts horizontally in the air.
FREE RUN ATTACK
button (during free run)
Horizontal wide cuts. When your attack hits an enemy, the enemy becomes the target automatically.
(Left Stick +) button
You can use the artes that you have assigned on the Options Menu by consuming TP. To activate an assigned arte, push the button while pushing the Left Stick in the direction of the assigned arte or by simply pressing the button. When you use a magic arte, casting starts when you press the button. The arte takes effect as soon as the casting finishes. Be aware that casting is cancelled if you get hit while casting.
ARTE STAND-BY AND CANCEL CASTING
When the controlled character uses an arte, holding the button allows the character to stand by in the state when the casting has finished, and releasing the button enables the use of the arte.
With certain artes such as Tractor Beam that have an area of effect, the Free Cursor appears. The arte originates from the location of the Free Cursor. Use the Left Stick to move the Free Cursor towards enemies if necessary.
You can use assigned artes by using Right Stick. You can also assign the artes of uncontrolled characters.
SKILL ALTERED ARTES
When using some artes with a corresponding skill, the artes may alter. These are called Skill Altered Artes and by using them several times, they become available on the Artes Screen even after removing the skill.
EXAMPLE OF SKILL ALTERED ARTES
Yuri has a base arte called Azure Edge. Using the Azure Edge with Chain skill set makes him learn Azure Storm. There are many different Skill Altered Artes so try to uncover and use them all.
In a combo attack, you can connect attacks in succession without a counterattack from the enemy. A combo is comprised of a normal attack > base arte > arcane arte. Shown below is an example of a combo.
NOTE: Skill Altered Artes can be chained within a combo when a specific skill is set.
CERBERUS STRIKE (BASE ARTE)
CRUSHING EAGLE (ARCANE ARTE)
For Auto-controlled characters, an item request is made before using the item; the item will be automatically used after a while. Press the button when you don’t want them to use the item. You can also change the settings so that they won’t make any item requests on the Edit Strategy Screen.
By repeatedly attacking an enemy during battle, red/blue/green formulas appear. Holding the button when the formula appears allows you to activate a Fatal Strike that can beat the enemy in one attack. Check the timing of the Fatal Strike’s appearance with the Fatal Strike Gauge.
NOTE: For enemies that can’t be defeated with a single Fatal Strike, the Fatal Strike will heavily damage them.
TYPES OF FATAL STRIKES
The colour of the formula varies depending on the normal attacks and artes that have hit your enemies. You can check each arte with the icons displayed on the Arte Screen. The types of Fatal Strikes varies depending on the colour of the formula.
Various effects are added to the character by activating a series of Fatal Strikes. This is called an FS Chain. The added effects, such as an increase in acquired experience or altering item acquisition rates, vary depending on the colour of the formula when activating the Fatal Strike.
A secret mission may be discovered when fighting against specific enemies. Completing a secret mission may give a bonus to the battle grade or allow you to acquire an item.
There are many kinds of secret missions, such as downing an enemy using a specific attack, so make sure to try to find them all.
ACTIVATE OVER LIMIT
Whenever your attacks hit the enemy without being blocked or you take damage, the Over Limit Gauge increases. When the gauge is full, the Over Limit level rises and the gauge continues to fill until used. Pressing the Directional buttons when at least one level of the Over Limit Gauge is full activates the Over Limit level of the corresponding direction you have pressed. You can consecutively attack and use artes without casting time during the Over Limit.

Directional buttons: Down button: Level 2
Directional buttons: Left button: Level 3
Directional buttons: Up button: Level 4
OVER LIMIT LEVEL
Having a specific item raises the maximum value of the Over Limit Level. For the high level Over Limits, various effects are added such as not consuming TP when using artes.
Burst artes are more powerful than arcane artes and advanced artes. Holding the button after using a skill altered arte, arcane arte or advanced arte during the Over Limit activates a burst arte. Combining burst artes into consecutive attacks provides a wide range of attacks.
NOTE: Burst artes become available as the game progresses.
Characters may become stunned when receiving damage. Be careful, stunned characters will not be able to move and will become vulnerable for a short period of time.
By repeatedly pushing the Left Stick, you can shorten the stun period.
